Here is the next part.

BTW: with several PMs and a few requests from local friends, I have noticed a desire for people to see Xin'Vauk on her own planet in a civilian outfit. So after getting some previous commissions and requests, I can draw up Xin'Vauk in her Kimono. I won't color it, because a few people would like to take a crack at it. Stay tuned.

Here is the second part, the choice is at the end of this chapter:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I asked how Kai’Faan was doing. Xin’Vauk informed me that he was sleeping, which was good news. His injury wasn’t causing too much pain. I sigh of relief was my only reply. I really hope he can make it back. I feel really bad about yelling at him the other day.

Looking at her, I wanted to check the gash she received on the side of her head a day or two ago. I brushed some of her loose strands of crimson hair aside to see the gash. Amazing……well…..for two reasons. One, the wound was almost completely healed. Tau medicine works fast. Two, she did not recoil from my hand as I touched her face. In fact, it she seemed to invite it. This was evident because Xin’Vauk reached up and held my hand to her face. The contrasting colors of my peach hand to her grayish blue face jolted me.

My heart raced. This wasn’t right. I pulled my hand away and stated, “Your.....wound seemed to heal very nicely,” I cleared my throat and looked away towards the river. Sure, it was easy for her. Xin’s race always welcomes any xeno species into their empire. Meanwhile, I was raised up in a culture of xenophobia.

A pause later…“I….uh…the Tau are grateful that you have been through so much to help us,” she promptly replied in absolute clear Low Gothic, “and you will save countless lives of my kind.” She used her finger to guide my chin to look back at her and said, “I couldn’t have done it without you, Gue’va” I thought she used to call me gue’la. Her face held such a soft expression. Just for a moment, I forgot about the years of xenophobic teachings of the Imperium. I wanted to say, “I shall protect this mission until I die,” but it mistakenly came out, “I shall protect you until I die.” Stupid me!!! Just keep my stupid mouth shut. “Ah…ahem…I mean….”

I closed my eyes to hide my embarrassment. I felt her hand gently touch my chest near my heart, I’m sure she felt it pounding. I was so nervous and confused. I was beginning to sweat from the nerves. It only moved her closer to me. While I kept my eyes closed, I only saw visions of:

When she protected me from orks when I first met her.
When she helped me escape the clutches of the old man.
When she killed the ork grabbing my head.
When…wait…...

I think her lips were centimeters from mine. This shouldn’t be happening. She was a trained warrior; I was only a badly trained recruit. She was raised with honor; I was raised with fear. She was xeno; I was taught to kill xeno. Such an opposite contrast that……

We both got startled when a bleep on the scanner went off. As we looked over, Kai’Faan had just awoken from the sound as well. Xin got up and ran to the scanner, confused, she grabbed the unit and brought it to Kai’Faan. I’m guessing she wanted him to tell her what it means.

While he and Xin had (I’m assuming) a tactical debate, I rushed to dorn my uniform again accompanied by my now cleaned chest armor. By the time my last latch was fastened on my armor, Xin ran to me while strapping on the backpack. She informed me that the scanner is picking up movement from the path we had taken to get here.

How did they find us? Was it my odor, now long gone? I looked along the path we took to get here, and noticed a few drips of cyan blood. DAMMIT!!! Kai’Faan was still bleeding before we got here. We might as well have left bread crumbs.

Running to Kai’Faan, I helped him up. He was trying to stifle the painful yelps he made while standing up. But an agonizing yell had left his mouth. It echoed throughout the chamber. The look on his face to me was of sorrow and guilt. Like he was pleading for forgiveness for being such a burden. I put his arm over my shoulder, and we began to wade through the water. It was a good thing he rested. Kai’Faan seemed to pull some of his own weight a little.

While trudging through the waist deep water, I could hear voices through the path we had come from. With the sound of the rushing river, I couldn’t tell if it was Orks, Humans, or even native creatures. But I didn’t want to wait around to find out. The friends on this planet have been pretty narrowed down as of late.

As I walked east (I think) upstream a few steps, and looked down. It would be so easy for something to trace us if we treaded along upstream. Looking back to the west downstream, there was a similar cave the water flowed into.

The sounds are getting closer, and Xin assumes I know what I was doing (boy, is she wrong). I have to think of something:

1) Tread east upstream. The scanner confirmed target pollen traces coming from that direction. We are sure that the plants are there. But walking upstream poses a few major problems. Kai’Faan is rested, but not strong yet. He looks like he can make it, but it will strain his wounded yet healing body. Also, I may be clean, but I’m sure my body scent can still be picked up easy flowing back with the water to our camping spot. That or Kai’Faan’s bleeding wound can be traced in the water in a similar fashion.

2) Tread west downstream. We can’t be traced at all (I think) if we move with the water. With the airborn pollen floating in this direction, it is evident that the airflow can hide any scent as well. Problem is, the scanner hasn’t picked up any target pollen traces in this direction. There might be plants downstream, but we are too close to completing this mission to be guessing. Also, I see the water flows faster once past the cave. If we move into that direction, I am sure there is no turning back. I do know that there is a huge lake 20 km west of here. I assume this underground river flows into that.
